By using UmbrellaNeed you agree to these terms. They are short because the site does very little: it runs calculations in your browser and publishes fixed, well-labeled rules of thumb.

What this site is

UmbrellaNeed provides free, browser-based estimators for umbrella (excess liability) insurance. All tools apply the same published rule — the larger of net worth or ten times annual income, rounded to whole millions, with add-ons per rental property and major risk item — and explain their arithmetic on the page and in the methodology.

The results are estimates, not advice

Nothing on this site is insurance, legal, financial or tax advice, and no page here creates an agent, broker, fiduciary or advisory relationship of any kind. Results are illustrative outputs of a simplified rule of thumb. They are not quotes, not coverage recommendations, and not a substitute for the judgment of a licensed insurance professional or attorney who knows your actual situation and jurisdiction.

Before buying any policy, confirm underlying-limit requirements, pricing, exclusions and eligibility with a licensed agent or your insurer. Insurance products, requirements and prices vary by carrier, by state and over time.

Acceptable use

You are welcome to use the calculators for personal, non-commercial planning, and to link to any page. You may not scrape the site at volume, resell or republish its content as your own, present its outputs as professional advice to third parties, or interfere with the site’s operation.

No warranty

The site and its tools are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy. While the published rule is fixed and the calculators are tested, we do not warrant that results will be error-free, that the site will be uninterrupted, or that the tools are suitable for your specific circumstances.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, UmbrellaNeed and its maintainers are not liable for any loss, damage, claim or expense arising from use of, or reliance on, this site or its outputs — including decisions about insurance purchased, coverage limits chosen, or actions taken toward any carrier. Your insurance decisions are your own, made with your own advisers.

Intellectual property

The text, design, code and calculators of this site are the property of UmbrellaNeed. The rule the site publishes is a widely known industry heuristic and is not claimed as proprietary; you are free to reason with it anywhere.

Links to external sites are provided for convenience. We do not control third-party sites and are not responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices. Advertising, when enabled, is served by third parties under their own terms; see the privacy policy for how that works.

Changes and governing terms

We may update these terms as the site evolves; the version published here is the version in effect. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance. If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay in force.
