Privacy Policy
Short version: the numbers you type into any calculator on this site are processed on your own device and are never transmitted to us. This page explains the few things that do happen — analytics, cookies and advertising — in plain language.
What happens to what you type
Every calculator on UmbrellaNeed runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript on the page itself. When you enter net worth, income, property counts or any other figure, that value is read by the page, used in the calculation, and displayed back to you. It is not sent to our servers, not logged, not shared with any third party, and not written to your device. There is no account system and no form on this site that submits your input anywhere. When you close or refresh the page, the values you entered are gone.
UmbrellaNeed does not use browser local storage, session storage or cookies to remember anything you enter into the calculators. If we ever change that, this policy will be updated first.
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, to understand aggregate traffic patterns — for example, how many visits a page receives and from which general regions. Google Analytics collects information such as your device type, browser, referring site and pages visited, using cookies. It does not receive anything you type into the calculators, because that data never leaves the calculation on your device.
You can prevent Google Analytics from recognizing you on return visits by disabling cookies in your browser settings, or by installing Google’s official opt-out browser add-on, available from Google’s support pages. You can also browse most of this site with cookies blocked entirely; the calculators work without them.
Cookies and how they are used
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. This site itself sets no cookies of its own. Cookies on this site come from the third parties described above and below: Google Analytics (to measure aggregate traffic) and, if advertising is enabled, Google AdSense (to fund the free calculators).
Advertising
If and when advertising is enabled on this site, it is served by Google AdSense. That matters for your privacy in four specific ways, which we spell out rather than bury:
- Third-party vendor. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on sites like this one.
- DoubleClick cookie. Google’s use of advertising cookies (including the DoubleClick cookie) enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- Opt-out of personalized advertising. You may opt out of personalized advertising at any time by visiting Google Ads Settings. Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland can manage their choices through Google’s consent tool when it is presented.
- Industry opt-out portal. You can opt out of third-party vendor cookies for personalized advertising more broadly at aboutads.info.
Where required by law — including for visitors in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom — this site relies on a certified consent management platform configured through Google’s advertising console to collect and honor consent before personalized advertising cookies are set.
What we never collect
- The financial figures you enter into any calculator.
- Your name, email address or contact details, unless you email us first (we then use your address only to reply).
- Anything stored in browser local storage or session storage.
We do not sell personal data, because we do not collect personal data. Aggregate, non-identifying analytics are the entire extent of what we see.
Children’s privacy
This site is intended for adults making household insurance decisions and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change — for example, if advertising is switched on or analytics configuration changes — this page will be updated with a revised description before those changes take effect. The effective date of this policy is the site’s launch, and the version above describes the site as it stands today.
