The calculators on UmbrellaNeed are planning aids, not professional advice. This page states what that means, without fine print.

No insurance, legal or financial advice

UmbrellaNeed is an educational tool. We are not an insurance company, an insurance agency, a broker, a law firm, or a financial advisory firm, and no part of this site — calculators, guides, FAQs or emails — constitutes insurance, legal, financial or tax advice, nor a recommendation to buy, avoid, increase or reduce any insurance product. No relationship with a licensed professional is created by using this site.

Results rest on simplified assumptions

Every estimate here is the output of a single published rule of thumb — the larger of net worth or ten times annual income, rounded to whole millions, with per-item add-ons — applied to the figures you type in. The rule is deliberately simplified: it cannot see your policy exclusions, your state’s legal environment, your carrier’s attachment requirements, your heirs, your business interests, or any of the hundred specifics that real underwriting weighs. Two households with identical inputs can correctly buy different limits. A tool that hides this would be lying by omission; this page exists so we never do.

The three things to verify before you buy

  1. Your carrier’s underlying-limit requirements. An umbrella only attaches over auto and home liability limits that meet the carrier’s minimum. Ask your insurer what those minimums are in your state — the answer differs by company and changes over time.
  2. What your policies actually cover. Exclusions, per-occurrence versus aggregate limits, and short-term rental restrictions all change which umbrella can attach over which policy. Read the liability sections of your own policies.
  3. The price and the product. No figure on this site is a quote. Pricing comes from carriers after underwriting; product terms vary. Get real quotes for the limit you are considering and compare them directly.

No liability for use

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the maintainers of UmbrellaNeed accept no liability for any loss or damage arising from use of this site or reliance on its outputs, including coverage decisions made toward any insurer. The terms of use set this out in full.

About advertising

This site is funded by advertising, which keeps the calculators free. Advertisers have no influence over the estimating rule, the content, or any output of the tools; the rule is fixed, published on the methodology page, and identical everywhere on the site. Advertisements are served by third parties under their own policies — see the privacy policy for details and opt-outs.

If any page ever reads as advice rather than as explanation, write to hello@umbrellaneed.site and we will fix the wording.
