About UmbrellaNeed

UmbrellaNeed exists to answer one question well: how much umbrella insurance fits your life. It does that with a set of free calculators built on a single published rule — and by being explicit about what the rule is, what it ignores, and what only a licensed agent can tell you.

Why we built it

Umbrella insurance is a product almost everyone meets at the point of sale, which is exactly the wrong moment to be forming your first view of what you need. The sizing conversation is full of numbers that vary by carrier, state and year — while the core of the decision, the relationship between your assets, your income and your exposure, does not vary at all. We built the calculators we wished existed: transparent about the formula, honest about the boundaries, and free of invented market figures that would quietly go stale.

Where the rule comes from

The estimate every tool on this site produces is the industry’s widely used rule of thumb: take the larger of net worth and ten times annual income, round up to the next whole million, and add a million per rental property or major risk item. It is a convention, not a law — and the site treats it that way, labeling it as a heuristic everywhere it appears. The methodology page unpacks each term and explains why none of the constants ever needs a data refresh.

Who maintains it

UmbrellaNeed is built and maintained by a small independent editorial team with a background in building clear, calculable web tools. Content is edited and fact-checked by the team against the published rule; we do not commission or publish sponsored recommendations, and no insurer or agency has any influence over the tools or their outputs. Editorial reviews are performed by the team as a whole rather than by a named individual, and where a page cannot answer something — carrier attachment requirements, state minimums, actual pricing — it says so and points you to the source that can.

What we are not

We are not an insurer, a broker, or a licensed advisory firm, and nothing here is insurance advice. The site is funded by advertising so that the calculators can stay free; that arrangement never shapes the arithmetic, which is fixed, published and identical on every page.
