Why estimate before you shop
Umbrella insurance is unusual among insurance products: you choose the limit yourself, in whole millions, and the price scales with that choice. Pick too little and a serious claim can climb past the top of your policy and reach your savings, your home equity or your future wages. Pick far more than you need and you pay every year for protection you are unlikely to use.
The trouble is that most people meet umbrella insurance at the moment of purchase, when the person across the table is the one supplying the numbers. Walking in with your own estimate changes that conversation. You already know whether your assets, your income and the things you are responsible for point to one million of extra coverage or several. You can spend the discussion on the parts that actually vary — what your insurer requires underneath, and what the premium looks like — instead of on the basics.
That is what these calculators are for. Each one takes a different angle on the same rule, so you can start from the question you actually have: how much, what it costs, whether you need it yet, or how it fits with the policies you already own.

A plain yes-no read. Three trigger lines — what you own, what you earn and what you are responsible for — decide whether an umbrella deserves a spot in your budget this year.

The only page on this site that puts a dollar figure on price. Bring the per-million rate from your own quote, and it turns a suggested limit into an annual premium.
what it costsHow it stacks
An umbrella does not replace your auto or home liability — it sits on top of it. Enter your current per-occurrence limit and see the two layers stack into total protection.

Rental property changes the math. Add the number of rentals and units you manage and see how tenant risk lifts the suggestion, one property at a time.

The estimating rule barely moves across state lines; the underlying limits your insurer requires first do. Learn the two things that differ and how to check them yourself.

Several tools on this site end with the same advice, so it is worth stating once, plainly. When you want to know what your insurer requires before an umbrella can attach, the answer is not on any website — it is in your own paperwork.
- Open your auto policy and find the liability section. Note the per-occurrence limit — that is the layer an umbrella would sit above for a car accident.
- Open your homeowners or renters policy and do the same. This is the layer that responds to injuries on your property.
- Ask your insurer one question: "If I add an umbrella, what underlying limits do I need?" Companies set their own attachment requirements, and the answer from your own carrier beats any general figure you will find online.
Those three numbers are the foundation. The calculators here estimate the layer that goes on top of them.
About this site
What is umbrella insurance?
Umbrella insurance is extra liability coverage that pays after your auto or home policy limits are used up. If a claim against you exceeds what those policies pay, the umbrella absorbs the next layer — up to the limit you bought. It is sometimes called excess liability, and it only attaches over policies you already hold, which is why the underlying limits matter so much.
Is this calculator free, and do you see my numbers?
It is free, and no — we never see your numbers. Every calculation runs locally in your browser. There is no account, no form that submits anywhere, and no server-side storage. Close the tab and the figures you typed are gone.
Which calculator should I start with?
If you want one number, start with the main calculator. If you are still deciding whether you need an umbrella at all, start with the trigger-line page. If you already have a quote in hand, the cost page turns it into a full picture. Each page links onward to the next logical step.
